Award-winning Solar Street Lights Light Up Renishaw Hills Estate
Located near Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, the 2.4 km access road to the new Renishaw Hills Estate has recently been illuminated with 100 solar street lights.
Featuring state-of-the-art technology, the ISSL+ integrated solar street lights were the first of their kind to be installed in South Africa on this scale.
“The concept of solar powered street lights is still very new to most South Africans. And many are unaware of the benefits that come with transitioning to solar. But we are optimistic that this technology will soon become commonplace in the near future,” said Justin Hughes, director of renewable energy company, Renu Holdings.
Convincing The Clients
As a lifestyle village designed for active yet mature residents over the age of fifty, Renishaw Hills Estate needed a lighting solution that would provide ample visibility and enhanced safety.
Given the novelty of solar technology, Renishaw project developers, Crookes Brothers Ltd., were initially hesitant to choose solar street lights over more conventional lights, despite the fact that solar street lights were a good fit for their green marketing strategy. But after turning to Renu for their expertise in renewable solutions, the developers were soon convinced of the advantages of solar. Costs, however, were still a major determining factor in their choice of lighting.
Following a lifecycle cost analysis - wherein conventional street light and solar street light costs were compared over a ten and twenty-five-year period – the developers opted for solar as a more cost effective solution over the long term, and decided to give Durban-based renewable energy specialists, Renu, the greenlight for the street light project.
The Benefits Of Choosing Solar Street Lights
When questioned on his decision to go solar, Phil Barker, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments had the following to say:
“Number one, they are a top quality product that came in at a very good price. Secondly, the eco responsible aspect - they tick that box being solar. And thirdly, the wow factor, one only has to look at them. We are very happy with them, in fact, we’re proud of them”
With an award-wining design, backed by 14 proprietary patents, the ISSL+ solar street lights provide a high quality and integrated lighting solution that offers a lifespan of up to ten years without maintenance.
The lights operate completely on their own power - which is generated by solar panels that store excess energy in nickel metal hydride batteries - and are not dependent on municipal electricity supply, ensuring Renishaw Hill residents are not affected by power cuts and outages.
This unique design also negates the need for civil works such as trenches or cabling. Installations are therefore less time consuming, and issues such as cable theft are no longer a concern.
In addition to this, safeguards such as a unique battery voltage that can only be used for the ISSL+ solar street lights and integrated battery and solar panel which are not directly visible from street level, further decrease the risk of theft.
Installing The Solar Street Lights
Designed to be fast, easy and cost-efficient, the solar street light project was very simple in terms of installation.
Taking a total of 5 days to put up 100 solar street lights and street poles across the 2.4 km stretch of road, the installation was done in record time.
“Our experience of the project was amazing. And the client feedback has been great. It has been a privilege to work with such innovative and exciting technology. And overall we are extremely happy with the project’s outcome,” said Hughes.
